Terms of Use

Last updated: May 1, 2026

VHS Garage is a small project run by two people who love old tapes. These terms cover the website at vhsgarage.com and the VHS Garage Recorder capture software. Use plain language to read them, because that's how they're written.

The short version

  • Use the site and the recorder for tapes you own or have permission to copy.
  • Don't upload anything illegal, harmful, or that isn't yours to share.
  • The software is free and provided as-is. No warranty. Use at your own risk.
  • You own the videos you record. We don't take a copy of them.
  • If you publish to YouTube, you're using your own YouTube account and YouTube's rules apply too.

Using the recorder

The VHS Garage Recorder runs in your browser. It uses your capture device, your webcam, and your computer's storage. Recordings save to a folder you choose on your own machine. We don't host or store your videos.

When you snap a photo of a tape sleeve, we send that photo to an AI service so it can suggest a title and description. You decide whether to keep the suggestion. More on that in our Privacy Policy.

Your tapes, your responsibility

You're responsible for what you record and what you upload. Only digitize and share content you have the right to. If you don't own the rights to something, don't put it on YouTube.

YouTube uploads

If you connect a YouTube account, uploads go straight from your browser to your channel. We don't get a copy and we don't post on your behalf. You can disconnect at any time from your Google account permissions.

No warranty

The site and software are provided "as is" without any warranty. Capture cards, browsers, and operating systems are weird. Things can break. Save your work. We're not liable for lost recordings, hardware issues, or anything else that happens while you use this.

Don't be a jerk

Don't try to break the site, abuse our forms, or use the tools to harass other people. If you submit photos to be featured, send your own setup. No stock photos, no other people's spaces.

Changes

We might update these terms as the project grows. If we make a meaningful change, we'll bump the "Last updated" date at the top.
